Information Literacy / Library Instruction: What's it all about
One of the buzz phrases in the library world these days is "information literacy."(... or "information fluency.") The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) has developed standards for higher education to enable these institutions and their libraries graduate information literate/information fluent students. The Association defines information literacy as "...a set of abilities requiring individuals to "recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information." to find additional information.
Accreditation agencies today are asking institutions to demonstrate how and when students enrolled in their institutions are being provided with information literacy skills and how and when the attainment of these skills are assessed. The New England Association of Schools & Colleges is one of these accreditation agencies. You will be hearing much more about information literacy and library instruction in the future!
