Google and Academe
Google has put forward a new financial search: Google Finance with "Business info, news, and interactive charts." Google Scholar appeared in November 2004 and continues to present libraries with dilemmas. As Google moves in more digitization, the pundits are theorizing about the continued need for libraries and librarians.
Walter Cronkite has been credited with this statement, "Whatever the cost of our libraries, the price is cheap, compared to that of an ignorant nation." Google can and should be seen as a possible step in the research process, not the be-all and end-all of it.
Many had searched Google Scholar for articles, only to be taken to a publishers site and asked for credit card information to purchase access to the article. It is entirely possible that the same article, had it been searched for in the databases provided by Wellehan Library, would be available for free full-text!
Do use Google--I do all the time--but use it judiciously. Start at "home" (Wellehan) first and then go to Google as needed.
